Officers Saving Lives

The Lynchburg Police Foundation and the Lynchburg Health Department help equip our officers with lifesaving Narcan medication that can revive someone experiencing a drug overdose.

In May 2023, Lynchburg Police Department officers saved three lives, including a baby.

The Department of Emergency Services (Lyncomm) received a frantic call from a woman at the CVS Pharmacy located at 2908 Campbell Avenue. The caller stated her 1-year-old baby had possibly overdosed, describing the infant as not breathing and unconscious. Officers Javaz Williams and Nicolas Ruble arrived first on the scene and found the baby gurgling and unresponsive.

Officer Ruble administered two doses of Narcan to the baby while Officer Williams continually updated LFD through Lyncomm as to the infant’s changing status. After administering Narcan, Officer Williams detected a pulse and observed the baby begin to breathe. The baby then started to vomit and cry. The baby was rushed to the arriving paramedics for further treatment.

Officers were able to determine that several adults had the baby and another infant with them at the James Crossing Apartments when the baby became unresponsive. They then drove to the CVS where they called for help and told CVS employees that the baby had possibly overdosed on Fentanyl or Methadone. Two cars were identified as being involved; K9 Kairos alerted on both vehicles. Heroin was found in one vehicle and Oxycodone (possibly Fentanyl) in the other. Three adults were detained while a search warrant was obtained for the Greenfield Drive address. The Lynchburg Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division as well as Child Protective Services responded to the location to assist.

As of May 5, the baby was in stable condition at the Lynchburg General Hospital.

LPD responded to the 800 block of Greenfield Drive (James Crossing Apartments) for an unresponsive male in the breezeway of the 820 building. Officers learned that the male subject had ingested crushed Percocet, alcohol, and marijuana while partying with friends. He ultimately became unresponsive and fell down several steps. Officer Joyner administered one dose of Narcan which was successful in reviving the subject. He declined transport to the ER and a family member arrived on the scene and volunteered to monitor his recovery.
